How To Choose A Suitable Smoke Alarm

change your smoke detector

Even the smallest of house fires can fill your home with dangerous smoke in a few minutes. It's critical that you select the correct smoke alarm for your home, have them properly installed and perform regular tests on.

residential smoke detectors come in two types, one is photoelectric, and the other is an ionization detector. In a photoelectric detector a beam of light is aimed into a chamber containing a photocell. Smoke goes into the chamber, which then scatters light, allowing some of the light to reach a photocell and set off the alarm. A smoky fire will normally set off a photoelectric detector sooner than a flaming fire.

The ionization detector has a small amount of a radioactive element that ionizes the air which gives of a tiny electrical charge. Smoke particles reduce this flow of current, and set the device into alarm.

Which type of detector works best? Each type has its advantages and disadvantages. Many of today's photoelectric units are wired into your homes electrical system. This means that if there is a loss of power, you will not be protected. Units that use ionization normally run on house current and have a battery for backup. They do however have a somewhat higher numner of false alarms. It would be a good idea to use both - an ionization detector in your bedroom hallway, and photoelectric in your main living area.

A general rule is to have a minimum of one smoke detector for every level of your home. You should also keep these guidelines in mind:

Do not install smoke detectors close to the kitchen, furnace, garage, or just outside a bathroom door. Try not to install a smoke detector in an area where there may not be enough circulation, i.e. corners. Install each smoke alarm on a ceiling or on a wall roughly 8 to 10 inches below the ceiling.

Once your detectors are installed, test each of them monthly. Almost every model these days comes with a button that makes this quite simple. If your smoke detector is not equipped with a test button simple test is to just light a candle blow it out and allow the smoke to waft into the smoke detector. The smoke should set off the alarm.

Smoke detector batteries should be replaced every year. It is simple to remember to do this on dates such as your birth date or the beginning of daylight savings time. While doing this, use a soft brush to clean the inside of the detector and its vents to ensure the unit's reliability.

Ionic Air Purifier - Plasmacluster Ions - Japan's Potent Weapon Against Deadly Bird Flu Virus H5N1

In a dramatic press update on 27 August 2008, Sharp Corporation unveiled its latest technological weapon against bird flu! Incorporated in its ionic air purifier, the Plasmacluster Ion Technology (more on this in a later post) has just been scientifically proven to be 99.9% effective in eliminating the bird flu virus known as H5N1.

Every now and then, the press reminds us that bird flu is the prime suspect to cause mankind's next pandemic. Pandemic does not just sound terrifying. It is. That’s when a highly contagious and deadly virus goes global, in a very negative sense. 50 million people may die in a global pandemic. No way, you say. But its happened before, during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic! That was blamed on the H1N1 virus which was only recently confirmed on 5 October 2005 by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be a bird flu virus.

If fear is gripping you right now, is it time to PANIC?

Not quite, not yet anyway. Statistically, as recorded by WHO as at 10 Sep 2008, "only" 245 people have died from the H5N1 virus. This is since 1996 when the virus first surfaced in China. So what’s the fuss? Mutation of the bird flu virus to achieve human-to-human transmission capability is the ultimate horror of the scientific community. Currently, there has been only one probable case of human-to-human transmission recorded in Thailand in September 2004. But if the dreaded virus mutation takes place, you can expect pandemonium on a global scale.

As the threat grows day by day, countries around the globe are conscientiously preparing for the worse (more on this in a later post). As protectors of our families and loved ones, we should start doing some homework too.

Ok, so what has the Sharp ionic air purifier to do with all this. Is it not just another ordinary ionic air purifier? Yes, because it takes care of the usual pollutants (dust, dirt, smoke, dander, pollen, cuisine odors, pet odors, allergens etc) that contaminate the air that we breathe and live in. But if we can get protection from all these and more in one ionic air purifier, especially one that is a tested defense shield against a potentially deadly virus, why not? With Sharp's Plasmacluster Ion Air Purifier, the whole complete package is promised.

If you’re value-conscious like me, the obvious question would be “yes, that makes a whole lot of sense but at what cost”? According to Sharp, none at all! Sharp contends that it is cheaper than any other ordinary ionic air purifier when measured over 5 years. Wow, value for money sure gets my attention! But, how is this possible in this nothing-is-for-free world?

Yes, its possible, claims Sharp. For instance, in its Plasmacluster Ionic Air Purifier Model FP-N40CX, Sharp contends that it is undoubtedly better value for money as there is no filter replacement costs for the first 5 years. At first sight, the typical competitor's upfront cost of US$160 looks cheap compared to Sharp's US$399. But add in the annual replacement filter replacement costs of US$100 and the total outlay for the competing ionic air purifier comes to US$560.

If you have relevant data, be it on Sharp or the competitors, I would greatly appreciate your input. Please drop me a note if you have actual experience.

In the meantime, I will study the Sharp Plasmacluster Ion Technology more closely. The time to research is now, while bird flu is still not quite at pandemic proportions.

Today is the day to get started. Experience is a good teacher. Imagine thousands of frantic people going from drugstore to drugstore looking for the same face mask. The N95 mask was touted as the only effective weapon as a near-pandemic scare gripped Asia. The year was 2003. SARS was a much dreaded acronym. The SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) virus started spreading in Asia and infected 8,096 people around the world, resulting in 774 fatalities. As always, being prepared is half the battle won.

Watch this space as we track exciting developments in our pursuit of safe, pure and clean air with nothing more than an ionic air purifier.

Dealing With Electrolux Cleaners

You probably know that Electrolux vacuum cleaners are favorites in many American households because of their long life span, but they do occasionally need repair. Any authorized Electrolux dealer can make repairs to your machine, although vacuum cleaners bought online, through eBay, or elsewhere outside of a franchise dealer are not covered by warranty.

It is not recommended for consumers to purchase a vacuum cleaner online because these models are often rebuilt, sometimes used, and, occasionally, these products are stolen.

Electrolux vacuum cleaner parts, however, can be found in abundance through a variety of online dealers. You will find replacement parts for Electrolux such as bags and filters at online stores, even the parts for some older vacuums like Lux Classic.

You can also find product manuals and user handbooks online and download them for your personal use. Some repairs can be performed at home with the assistance of the manual, but an authorized Electrolux store should be responsible for all major service and cleaning to the machine.

The Electrolux brand name was taken over by a Swedish AB Electrolux some four years ago. The US market knew this company under the different name, Eureka, which provided the household with quality vacuum cleaners even before they became known under the name they have now. One of the leaders in the vacuum cleaners industry is the AB Electrolux that provides quality across the entire world.

You will find that the vacuums from Electrolux are available in different designs, such as convenient lightweight models, classic canister vacuums and good old upright vacuums. One powerfull appliance is in the making right now, a robotic vacuum cleaner, which will be available for purchase in the future. This cutting edge vacuum will offer a trouble-free floor cleaning solution that automatically recharges itself at the special charging station whenever the battery runs low.

There are many different options available in each style of modern Electrolux machine as well. There are models that have retractable cords that are extra long, others can be recharged at their stations and some vacuums are offering low level of noise. Whatever you need from a cleaner, Electrolux has it. And for a low price.

A Look At Portable Dishwashers

Portable dishwashers are just the ticket for those with less than enough space for a more permanent and heavier dishwasher. The width ranges from 18 inches on smaller units, and larger units can be as wide as 24 inches. And its worth to notice they are much cheaper.

All portable dishwashers come with wheels on them. It's easy to move a portable dishwasher via rollers, if you don't plan to use it for some reason, like deciding for a hand-washing. This is so much easier for maneuvering, especially for everyone who plans on moving to a new home soon.

Most of them has two rolling baskets which are used for storing dishes. You won't find such bells and whistles that full-sized units have, but they will have enough settings to choose from. For example, many units have a super-powerful cycle for pots and pans. Some also offer an option for boosting the water temperature when the house’s hot water supply is low.

To operate a countertop dishwasher, you must roll it over to the sink and connect it to a hose. And that part is quite easy. Just screw the hose to the sink plumbing. Remember that you won't be able to use the sink while machine is working and do not forget to unclog the sink, in case that is needed. Drano or Liquid Plumr should do the trick. Also, be sure to rinse dishes before putting them in the machine. The grime buildup and severe cases of clogging will be prevented by this.

Most manufacturers on the market are offering portable models of their full-size appliances. This includes Bosch, KitchenAid, Maytag, Whirlpool, GE, and Kenmore.

A portable dishwasher’s top acts as a countertop in many households, a godsend when space is at a premium. And, there are compact dishwashers that are can be put on your countertop, on your kitchen elements. No matter which one you choose, you will definitely save precious space in your home.

Taking Care Of Your Freezer

To achieve good level of safety and efficiency, the freezers require maintenance and care from you. Make sure to read all manufacturers instructions to ensure proper installation and use. Here are some important steps to take to help your upright freezer run at the highest efficiency possible:

Choose a cool and dry room for your new appliance, and it's best if the room has more then 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The freezer mechanism will then run the best possible way. Your freezer should never be near any source that is radiating heat. Stay away from placing your freezer near a heating appliance. You should place your freezer at the place that doesn't get any sunlight during the day

When you put your freezer at the place you want it, be sure that it is leveled. Your doors will close and open properly at all time if you do this. You can do one more neat trick by tilting the upright freezer away from the front which will help the doors to close easy.

To avoid losing cold air, make sure you clean the door seals. One of the most important factors of keeping the cold temperature is the tight seal. Your freezer should be positioned in such a way that it has adequate air circulation. The heat generated by the freezer and the heat from inside must be dispersed by the appliance itself. The freezer will definitely have to work harder if the circulation is limited.

Efficiency of your freezer grows as you put more food into it. Filling your appliance at least 3/4 full is more efficient than an almost empty freezer. Defrost the freezer according to manufacturer directions, but not less than once a year. Defrost more often if the frost builds up to more than half inch.

Avoid leaving the door open for long periods. If you want to know what exactly you have in your freezer without checking it manually, you can keep the list of items at the doors. Use pen and paper that are always near the appliance so you can track what you are taking or putting inside the unit.

These few guidelines are enough for you to keep your freezer running perfectly for a long time. You just have to stick to this and you won't have any troubles at all.

The Secret Of Bissell Cleaner's Design

The Bissell vacuum company might very well be one of the best known and most trusted on the market today. Bissell is a word that became synonymous with floor and carpet cleaning in US and around the world for over a century.

The company has earned the right to that reputation. The first Bissell vacuum was actually a carpet sweeper, designed by Melville Bissell himself. Before 150 years ago Melville and Anna Bissell had a small shop in Grand Rapids. At the time Anna couldn't handle to clean the sawdust at the store anymore, Melville had to figure out a way to solve the problem. And then the first Bissell product was born.

Just several years after Melville died and then Anna jumped forward and made a Bissell vacuum company a well known brand. Anna didn't just became the first woman that was a chief executive officer in a US company, she led the Bissell into world and success.

There were more and more products being produced by Bissell besides sweepers as company moved forward - carpet shampooers, vacuums, steam mop and upholstery cleaners. As a homage to Melville for his thirst and desire for invention, the Bissell put emphasis on the research and development. No matter the case, the effort did pay off.

Although sweepers put it on the map, the Bissell vacuum company's vacuums are well known for a number of reasons. You will be able to find Bissell appliances in almost any retail store that sells vacuum cleaners. You can find these vacuum cleaners everywhere, from tiny corner stones to the big malls. Standard Bissell parts, such as bags and belts, can be found just about anywhere. The company's makes and models are so popular, it generally isn't a problem to find the right part when it's needed.

Bissell cleaners are well known for working at high levels. The strength and durabiity are installed in Bissell products, whether they are vacuum or a shampooer. One of these cleaning machines is really affordable, especially when it is compared to the competitiors models. Bissell tends to offer something in almost every price range.
